Pre-K Program

Pre-K is the last full year before kindergarten, and it carries a real responsibility. Our Pre-K program is designed in close conversation with local kindergarten teachers — both in Alexandria City Public Schools and in the private schools many of our families attend. We know exactly what kindergarten teachers are hoping to see on day one, and we build those skills systematically across the year.

Children leave our Pre-K writing their names confidently, decoding simple words, recognizing and writing numerals well past ten, following multi-step directions, sitting through extended group instruction, navigating social conflict with words, and managing their own belongings, bathroom needs, and lunchtime routines independently.

Our Pre-K curriculum systematically teaches letter sounds, blending, and decoding. Children move from recognizing letters in preschool to actually sounding out short consonant-vowel-consonant words by the end of the Pre-K year. Many of our Pre-K graduates are reading sight words confidently and beginning to read simple early-reader books.

The approach is structured, evidence-based, and joyful. We don't drill, but we do teach explicitly. Small-group instruction differentiates by readiness so children who are ready to read are challenged, and children who need more time get the patient, foundational practice they need.

Pre-K children write their names daily — not just to sign their art, but as a real handwriting practice. We teach correct letter formation, proper pencil grip (with grippers when helpful), and the fine motor exercises that build the hand strength kindergarten writing demands.

By the end of the year, our Pre-K children are typically writing their first and last names legibly, copying short words, and beginning to write simple phrases independently — exactly the readiness profile kindergarten teachers describe as 'ready.'

Pre-K math goes beyond counting. Children work with addition and subtraction stories using manipulatives, build and extend complex patterns, measure and compare, work with shape attributes, and develop true number sense well past ten. Hands-on STEM activities — building, testing, observing, and revising — happen every week.

Math is concrete, visual, and conversational. We focus on building durable understanding, not on memorizing facts, because the children who develop real number sense in Pre-K are the same children who succeed in elementary school math.

Our Pre-K program includes regular beginning Spanish exposure — colors, numbers, greetings, songs, and simple phrases. Early exposure to a second language at this age has well-documented benefits for cognitive flexibility, phonological awareness, and openness to language learning later in life. We don't promise fluency, but we do promise that your child will arrive at kindergarten comfortable hearing and trying a second language.

When kindergarten teachers describe a 'ready' child, they rarely lead with academics. They describe a child who can listen to directions, manage frustration, hang up a coat, find their lunchbox, ask for help, take turns, and recover from disappointment. Those are executive function and self-regulation skills, and they are the explicit focus of our Pre-K classroom.

Our Pre-K children manage their own routines, contribute to classroom jobs, navigate social conflict with adult support, and demonstrate the kind of focused, independent work habits that kindergarten will require on day one.

We conduct ongoing kindergarten readiness assessments throughout the Pre-K year and share progress with families so there are no surprises. We help families navigate the kindergarten application process — public, private, or boundary-exception — and offer specific, actionable guidance on supporting your child's readiness at home.

Pre-K graduation is a real moment at Discovery Time. Families remember it for years. The children walk into kindergarten the next fall not as anxious newcomers but as confident, capable, well-prepared students ready for whatever school sends their way.
